  • Alkalin8.3 (250ml, 500ml) pH buffer/Alkalinity Supplement

    Brightwell Aquatics Alkalin8.3 (250ml, 500ml) pH buffer/Alkalinity Supplement

    6 in stock

Overview Raises alkalinity, adjusts pH to 8.3 Unlike single component KH products such as sodium carbonate, Alkalin 8.3 is a multi-component automatic buffer that regulates pH and its use makes for a much more stable aquarium.  Eliminates pH and KH instability caused by poor salt mixes and ineffective buffering products. Highly-effective alkalinity(KH)-increasing (”buffer”) solution. Helps increase pH Stability in an aquarium by raising the alkalinity. Provides a source of carbonates, which make up the majority by weight of aragonite, the mineral secreted by reef-building organisms as skeletal material. Continued addition raises pH until 8.3 is reached, at which point the pH remains unchanged and the alkalinity alone increases. Over 50% stronger than most competing products. Free of phosphates, silicate, and organic material. Formulated by a marine scientist Sizes 250ml | 500ml Technical Background Alkalinity, also referred to as carbonate hardness or buffering capacity, is essentially a means of quantifying the stability of pH in a solution, such as aquarium water. Alkalinity is of extreme importance in a marine aquarium, owing to the manner in which it influences pH. In an aquarium, weak acids formed by oxygen respiration and the decomposition of organic material gradually deplete alkalinity. If left unchecked, the alkalinity drops below a critical level and pH begins to fluctuate more wildly than is normally suggested (a daily pH shift of +/-0.2 is normal in marine aquaria), causing stress to livestock. Alkalinity is also depleted by reef-building organisms during the production of aragonite (~60% carbonates by weight), and is therefore very important for their rapid growth. Maintaining the alkalinity in marine aquaria between 7.5 - 9.5 dKH (2.7 - 3.4 meq/L) will generally maintain pH within the desired range. The rate at which alkalinity is depleted in a reef aquarium is determined by the stocking density of reef-building livestock, type of lighting, rate of water circulation, and other biological, physical, and chemical conditions; therefore, each aquarium will have different requirements for the rate of alkalinity supplementation. Once the rate of alkalinity depletion in the aquarium has been determined, the proper dosing rate of this product can be easily calculated. It is recommended that a quality salt mix with the proper (not augmented) alkalinity and concentrations of major, minor, and trace elements be used to establish natural seawater parameters in the reef aquarium, providing a stable ionic foundation on which to build. For additional information on alkalinity and other important aspects of marine chemistry for marine aquaria. All Brightwell Aquatics liquid water care supplements are made with purified water and high purity materials. We develop formulae for aquaria based on empirical data, using observation and measurement rather than theory. Instructions and Guidelines Basic: Shake product well before using. Add product at the maximum rate of 5 ml (1 capful) per 30 US-gallons daily until the desired alkalinity is attained, then dose daily or weekly as needed (see below) to maintain alkalinity between 7 - 12 dKH. When used in this fashion, 250 ml treats up to 1,500 US-gallons (5,678 L). Advanced: Determine the alkalinity in the aquarium using an accurate test kit before supplementing. Shake product well before using. Each ml of Brightwell Aquatics Alkalin8.3 will increase the alkalinity in 1 US-gallon (3.785 L) of water by 3.1 dKH (1.1 meq/L). If the initial alkalinity in the aquarium is below 7 dKH (2.5 meq/L), add this product at the maximum rate of 5 ml per 10 US-gallons daily until the desired alkalinity is attained, then dose daily or weekly as needed (see below). For minor adjustments to alkalinity, add 5 ml (1 tsp) of Alkalin8.3 per 30 US-gallons of aquarium water as needed to maintain the alkalinity within the proper range. Always try to maintain the alkalinity within a range of +/-1 dKH. To determine the rate of alkalinity depletion once the desired alkalinity has been acquired, measure the alkalinity at the same time each day over a one- to two-week period. To determine the daily dosing rate (preferable to weekly dosing) for alkalinity maintenance: estimate the volume of water in the entire aquarium system; divide the daily decrease in alkalinity by 3.1 (when measuring alkalinity by dKH; divide by 1.1 when measuring by meq/L); multiply this number by the volume of water in the system to get the daily dosage required (ml) to maintain a stable alkalinity. Daily dosing maintains a more stable alkalinity and pH (and a more natural environment) than dosing weekly, in which the alkalinity spikes just after dosing and then gradually decreases throughout the course of the week. Problem pH Aquariums:  Aquaria with low circulation at the water’s surface, or in which a CO2-injected calcium reactor is being employed, or which are placed in an enclosed room with human and animal inhabitants (giving off CO2 into the air), often have a depressed pH due to carbon dioxide build up. Boost pH+ can help overcome this along with other measures, such as providing outside air to the skimmer intake port or other methods to control CO2 and bring pH in the aquarium back into a higher desired range without raising alkalinity to an unacceptable level. Use Boost pH+ as directed and do not exceed a pH value of 8.5, because pH at 8.6 or higher may be stressful and/or damaging to sensitive aquairum inhabitants. Additionally, changes to pH should be made very gradually, again to avoid stressing aquarium inhabitants. See suggestions for adjusting alkalinity below. It is not unusual for pH to fluctuate throughout the course of 24-hours between seemingly wide-ranging values (i.e. lower at night higher during the middle of the day); this is a natural occurrence that is caused by changes in the rates of photosynthesis between dark and light periods. If pH levels are seen to be constantly below the desired level and alkalinity is within the proper range, then the addition of Boost pH+, this product, may be very helpful. Caution: Contains carbonate and bicarbonate salts; harmful if swallowed. If swallowed: give water, get medical attention. May cause eye or skin irritation. If in eyes, flush with water for 15 minutes, get medical attention. If on skin, wash thoroughly with water. Keep out of reach of children. Not for human consumption. • AminOmega (60ml, 125ml) Amino Acid Additive

Brightwell Aquatics AminOmega (60ml, 125ml) Amino Acid Additive

    5 in stock

Overview Provides marine sources of amino acids and omega-3 and -6 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). Increases the nutritional value of foods for marine fishes and invertebrates, particularly for fishes that show signs of head and lateral line erosion. May be used to fortify prepared and live foods. Contains no shark-derived ingredients. Composed of a blend of unique marine fish and crustacean sources of proteins and essential fatty acids, as well as important vitamins. Does not require refrigeration. Formulated by a marine scientist. Sizes 60ml | 125ml  Technical Background AminŌmega is a unique blend of amino acids and omega-3 and -6 HUFAs of marine origin, formulated for enrichment of live and prepared foods. It combines the best features of self-emulsifying liquid concentrate products with amino acids present in proportions found in various species of marine fishes. These substances are used by the body to create and repair tissue. While the use of amino acids and omega-3 and -6 HUFAs is primarily to fortify foods to be consumed by fishes, it has also proven effective in increasing the rate of tissue growth in corals, clams, crustaceans, and their respective allies. Fishes that receive a diet deficient in one or more crucial aspects may develop deterioration of the tissue along the lateral line and around the face. As noted, amino acids and omega-3 and -6 HUFAs have been shown to repair tissue damage caused by deficient diet. AminŌmega is a concentrated product and should not be overdosed or added directly to aquarium water; doing so may cause water quality to deteriorate. For fishes that show signs of tissue damage, such as head and lateral line erosion (HLLE), have patience that AminŌmega is providing the necessary amino and omega acids and allow sufficient time to see results; do not be tempted to overdose, as doing so may cause more harm than good by impacting water quality as mentioned above. No medicinal claims are made for AminŌmega, however amino acids and omega-3 and -6 HUFAs have been consistently observed to positively impact tissue generation. All Brightwell Aquatics liquid supplements are made with purified water and high purity materials. We develop formulae for aquaria based on empirical data, using observation and measurement rather than theory. AminŌmega does not require refrigeration, however storage in a cool, shaded area will prolong the stability of the components. Refrigeration will maximize the shelf-life of the product. Instructions and Guidelines To fortify prepared food: Shake product well before using. Place food in a clean container such as a small bowl or cup and add only enough AminŌmega to saturate. Allow at least 5 minutes to elapse before feeding, enabling adequate time for the product to become thoroughly absorbed by the food. Liquid food suspensions may be fortified by adding 0.5 ml (approximately 4 drops) AminŌmega per 10 ml of food suspension; stir to mix and allow 5 minutes to elapse before feeding. Maximum benefit of any liquid food suspension is achieved when the food is target-fed to the intended organisms rather than poured into a stream of water and allowed to disperse randomly throughout the aquarium. Over a period of several months, the dosage may be increased by 50% if so desired as long as water quality is monitored and maintained to within the required ranges. Note that starting at a low dosage will not cause any harm to the livestock, and will enable you to notice subtle changes in the appearance of the system that indicate the effectiveness and need for the product. Observe water quality carefully at all times, making adjustments as needed. To fortify live food: Shake product well before using. Separate the portion of the live food (such as rotifers, daphnia, brine shrimp, etc.) and place them in a clean vessel without water circulation. Add 1 drop AminŌmega per quart of water in the vessel and stir gently to disperse the droplets throughout, then allow 20 - 40 minutes for the organisms to consume the droplets. Next, strain the organisms from the vessel with a fine-mesh net and gently rinse them over a sink with a small amount of fresh water. Feed the organisms immediately to the aquarium inhabitants. Boosting the nutritional profile of any food: It is always a good idea to add vitamins, minerals and amino acids to any foods your are feeding.  You can also add garlic or other healthy nutritional ingredients.  Caution: Keep out of reach of children. Not for human consumption. Guaranteed Analysis Moisture (max) 78.80%, Crude Protein (min) 0.20%, Crude Fat (min) 20.00%, Crude Fiber (min) 0.00%, Ascorbic Acid (C) 100 mg/oz. • API Nitrate Test Kit

    API Nitrate Test Kit

    3 in stock

Measures nitrate levels in both fresh & saltwater aquariums. Tests nitrate levels from 0 to 160 ppm. 90 tests per kit.Freshwater/Saltwater Nitrate Test Instructions:Why Test For Nitrate?Nitrate (NO3-) is produced in the aquarium by the biological filter. Beneficial bacteria in the biological filter convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate. A high nitrate level indicates a build-up of fish waste and organic compounds, resulting in poor water quality and contributing to the likelihood of fish disease. Excessive nitrate also provides a nitrogen source that can stimulate algal blooms. In the opinion of many aquarists, maintaining a low nitrate level improves the health of fish and invertebrates.Testing Tips:This test kit reads total nitrate (NO3-) level in parts per million (ppm) which are equivalent to milligrams per liter (mg/L) from 0 ppm to 160 ppm, in either fresh or saltwater aquariums. This kit includes two Nitrate Test Color Charts one for freshwater aquariums, and one for saltwater aquariums so be sure to use the correct chart for your type of aquarium when interpreting test results. The Freshwater Nitrate Test Color Chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added. This test kit measures nitrate as nitrate ion or total nitrate. Other nitrate test kits that measure nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) will give readings 4.4 times LESS than this test kit.Directions for Testing Nitrate: Read thoroughly before testing. Do not allow Test Solutions to get into aquarium. To remove childproof safety cap: With one hand, push red tab left with thumb while unscrewing cap with free hand. Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested (to the line on the tube). Add 10 drops from Nitrate Test Solution Bottle # 1, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops added to the water sample. Cap the test tube and invert tube several times to mix solution. Do not hold finger over the open end of the tube, as this may affect test results. Vigorously shake the Nitrate Test Solution Bottle # 2 for at least 30 seconds. This step is extremely important to insure accuracy of test results. Now add 10 drops from Nitrate Test Solution Bottle #2, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops to the water sample. Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for one minute. This step is extremely important to insure accuracy of test results. Wait five minutes for the color to develop. Read the test results by matching the color of the solution against those on the Nitrate Test Color Chart. The tube should be viewed against the white area beside the color chart. Color comparisons are best made in a well-lit area. The closest match indicates the ppm (mg/L) of nitrate in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after each use. What The Test Results Mean:In new freshwater and saltwater aquariums the nitrate level will gradually climb as the biological filter becomes established. A nitrate level of 40 ppm (mg/L) or less is recommended for freshwater aquariums. Many marine aquarists prefer to keep nitrate levels as low as possible, especially when keeping invertebrates.Monitoring Nitrate Levels:Regular testing for nitrate is an essential part of routine aquarium maintenance. Aquarium water should be tested for nitrate once a week to make sure the nitrate does not reach an undesirable level.Reducing Nitrate in the Aquarium:In FreshwaterUse Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Nitra-Zorb to remove nitrate from freshwater aquariums. Nitra-Zorb is a rechargeable filtration material that removes nitrate from freshwater. Making partial water changes can also help reduce the nitrate level, especially if the initial nitrate level is very high. However, because many tap water supplies contain nitrate, it can be difficult to lower nitrate levels by this method. Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Purifier will remove all pollutants, including nitrate, from tap water, making water changes effective. The Tap Water Purifier makes any tap water perfect aquarium water. In SaltwaterPartial water changes are the easiest way to lower the nitrate in a saltwater aquarium. Keep in mind, however, that the biological filter constantly produces nitrate. Also, because many tap water supplies contain nitrate, it can be difficult to lower nitrate levels by this method. Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Purifier will remove all pollutants, including nitrate, from the tap water making water changes effective. The Tap Water Purifier makes any tap water perfect aquarium water.DANGER: HARMFUL Xn & CORROSIVE C Bottle #1 contains 41% Hydrochloric acid Causes burns Irritating to respiratory system Harmful if swallowed Keep locked up and out of the reach of children In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water (at least 15 minutes) and seek medical advice immediately Remove contaminated clothing Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show label where possible). • API Ammonia Test Kit

    API Ammonia Test Kit

    4 in stock

Salicylate test measures ammonia levels in both fresh & saltwater aquariums. Ammonia, the #1 killer of tropical fish, is continually produced in the aquarium from fish waste & uneaten fish food. Tests ammonia levels from 0 to 8 ppm. Test kit of 110 tests. Why test for Ammonia?Tropical fish continually release ammonia (NH3) directly into the aquarium through their gills, urine, and solid waste. Uneaten food and other decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. A natural mechanism exists that controls ammonia in the aquarium the biological filter. It is made up of nitrifying bacteria, which live in the gravel bed. However, as with any natural process, imbalances can occur. Testing for the presence of toxic ammonia is essential, so that once detected, steps can be taken to remove it. Otherwise, ammonia in the aquarium will damage gill membranes, and prevent fish from carrying on normal respiration. High levels of ammonia quickly lead to fish death. Even trace amounts stress fish, suppressing their immune system and thereby increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks and subsequent fish loss.Testing Tips:This salicylate based ammonia test kit reads the total ammonia level in parts per million (ppm) which are equivalent to milligrams per Liter (mg/L) from 0 ppm to 8.0 ppm (mg/L), in either fresh or saltwater aquariums. Thus, there are two Ammonia Test Color Charts one for freshwater aquariums, and one for saltwater aquariums so be sure to use the correct chart for your type of aquarium when interpreting test results. The Freshwater Ammonia Test Color Chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added.Directions for Testing Ammonia Levels Read thoroughly before testing. Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for 5 seconds. Do not hold finger over the open end of the tube, as this may affect the test results. Wait 5 minutes for the color to develop. Read the test results by matching the test solution against the Ammonia Test Color Chart. The tube should be viewed against the white area beside the color chart. Color comparisons are best made in a well-lit area. The closest match indicates the ppm (mg/L) of ammonia in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after each use. What the Test Results Mean:In a new freshwater or saltwater aquarium, the ammonia level may surge to 6 ppm (mg/L) or more, and then fall rapidly as the biological filter becomes established. The ammonia will be converted to nitrite (also toxic), then to nitrate. This process may take several weeks. Use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals STRESS ZYME to speed up the development of the biological filter. In an established aquarium, the ammonia level should always remain at 0 ppm (mg/L). The presence of ammonia indicates possible over-feeding, too many fish, or inadequate biological filtration. The ammonia level is not an indication of the nitrite level; nitrite is another toxic waste material which must be tested separately.Monitoring Ammonia Levels:Regular testing is necessary to make sure the ammonia level is safe. Aquarium water should be tested for ammonia every other day when the aquarium is first set up, and once a week after the biological filter has been established (in about 4 to 6 weeks).Detoxifying Ammonia Using AMMO-LOCK in Freshwater and Saltwater Aquariums:To detoxify ammonia, use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals AMMO-LOCK to instantly lock up ammonia. AMMO-LOCK does not remove ammonia, it simply converts toxic ammonia to a non-toxic form. Ammonia test kits will still test positive for ammonia, even though it is non-toxic. The biological filter will then consume the non-toxic ammonia, converting it to nitrite and then to nitrate.Filtering Method to Remove Ammonia in Freshwater Aquariums:Filter aquarium water with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals AMMO-CARB or AMMO-CHIPS to remove ammonia and improve water quality.Water ChangesChanging 25% of the aquarium water will reduce the ammonia level. In an emergency, a daily water change may be required over several days. Be sure to use a water conditioner like Stress Coat or AMMO-LOCK, when adding tap water back into the aquarium.Danger: HARMFUL & CORROSIVE C Bottle #2 contains sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite Causes severe burns Contact with acids liberates toxic gas Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed Danger of cumulative effects Keep locked up and out of the reach of children Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water (at least 15 minutes) and seek medical advice immediately. Test reads 0 to 10 mg/ or parts per million (ppm) of phosphate. Helps to decrease the likelyhood og having unsightly algae and green water blooms.Test kit of 150 tests. Why test for Phosphate?Phosphate enters the aquarium from fish and invertebrate waste and decaying organic matter, such as dead algae and uneaten fish food. Water treatment facilities may add phosphate to tap water to prevent pipe corrosion and reduce concentrations of heavy metals in drinking water.Unnecessary phosphate may cause an undesirable cloud or tint in aquarium water. In saltwater aquariums, phosphate precipitates dissolved calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions, inhibiting the growth of hard corals and other reef-building organisms.Testing Tips:The Phosphate Test Kit reads the total phosphate level in parts per million (ppm), which are equivalent to milligrams per liter (mg/L) from 0 ppm (mg/L) to 10.0 ppm (mg/L), in either freshwater or saltwater aquariums. There are two Phosphate Test Color Charts one for freshwater aquariums, and one for saltwater aquariums so be sure to use the correct chart for your type of aquarium when interpreting test results. The Freshwater Phosphate Test Color Chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added or for testing a pond.Directions for Testing Phosphate Levels Read thoroughly before testing. Do not allow test solutions to get into aquarium. To remove childproof safety cap: With one hand, push red tab left with thumb while unscrewing cap with free hand. Fill the test tube with 5ml of water to be tested (to the line on the tube). Add 6 drops from Phosphate Test Solution Bottle #1 to the test tube, holding the dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops added to the water sample. Cap and shake the test tube vigorously for 5 seconds. Add 6 drops from Phosphate Test Solution Bottle #2 to the test tube, holding the dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops added to the water sample. Bottle #2 has a very thick solution and may require increased pressure while squeezing to release drops. Cap and shake the test tube vigorously for 5 seconds. Wait 3 minutes for full color to develop. After waiting 3 minutes. read the test results by matching the test solution against the appropriate Phosphate Test Color Chart. The tube should be viewed against the white area beside the color chart. Color comparisons are best made in a well-lit area. The closest match indicates the ppm (mg/L) of total phosphate (PO34) in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after each use. What the Test Results Mean:Ideally, the phosphate level should be zero in saltwater aquariums and freshwater aquariums or ponds, including those containing live plants. The phosphate level in a new aquarium will depend on the purity of the water used to fill the aquarium. Phosphate level in tap water can vary daily depending on the treatment process used. Phosphate tends to accumulate in established aquariums.Reducing Phosphate using Phos-Zorb:To continually remove phosphate from the aquarium, use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Phos-Zorb. Phos-Zorb is a special filtration resin that removes phosphate and silicate ions from freshwater and saltwater aquariums.Reducing Phosphate by Water Changes:To quickly reduce phosphate levels, perform a partial water change. Remove any dirt and uneaten fish food from the bottom of the aquarium and change 25% to 50% of the water, depending on the phosphate concentration. To be sure the water source does not contain phosphate, use the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Filter to remove all unwanted phosphate before adding water to your aquarium.Corrosive: Bottle #1: Contains sulfuric acid. Causes severe burns. Keep locked up and out of reach of children. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water for 15 minutes and seek medical advice. Remove contact lens, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing. If swallowed, contact a physician or call a Poison Control Center immediately. Never add water to this product. In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show label where possible). Bottle #2 Keep out of reach of children. Eye contact: gently flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lens, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing. Skin contact: wash thoroughly with soap and water. If swallowed, contact a physician or Poison Control Center immediately.
